Alcohol units calculator

A standard unit is 10 g of pure alcohol. A 500 ml beer at 5% holds two units, a 175 ml glass of wine at 13% nearly 1.8. The tool adds up the drinks and converts them into grams and calories.

The clearance time is indicative: the liver processes about one unit an hour, but the rate varies widely between people. Do not use this calculation to decide whether you can drive.

Frequently asked questions

What is the recommended weekly limit?

UK guidance, among the most cited, sets a maximum of 14 units a week spread over at least three days. No level has been shown to be entirely risk-free.

Why is alcohol so calorific?

Pure alcohol carries 7 kcal per gram, almost as much as fat. Sugar from beer, sweet wine or cocktails adds to that.

Does eating reduce the effect?

It slows absorption, so the blood alcohol peak is lower, but the total amount your liver has to process is unchanged.
